On L.A.'s homelessness crisis

But to call homelessness a choice is to dismiss the complexities of human frailty. More common on the streets are tangled narratives of trauma, abuse, loss, physical and mental illness, loneliness, addiction and paralyzing poverty, and yes, some peddle drugs, steal and prey on others to survive.

The new numbers, which stand as an indictment of the official response, show a 24% increase in the number of homeless young people and a 7% increase among seniors. They underline a direct correlation with the crippling shortage of affordable housing.

Even the little things that could make a difference get bollixed up by bureaucracy and lack of political and moral will. To cite one example, the nonprofit Chrysalis has a program to help clean city streets with formerly homeless people, offering them a path toward better lives. And as we all know, Los Angeles has been trashed, partly because of the spread of encampments, partly because of illegal dumping, partly because the city can’t keep up with despera

Most expensive drug to purchase at about US$ 2.1mn

That puts Zolgensma's annual list price at $425,000, which Novartis said is less expensive than Spinraza, a competing therapy for spinal muscular atrophy made by Biogen.

The Institute for Clinical and Economic Review, a group that evaluates drug pricing and effectiveness, said in a statement that an appropriate all-in price range for Zolgensma would be between $1.1 million and $1.9 million — below what Novartis set.
But still a fucking lot, unaffordable especially for those who desperately need this medication. But thinking about Chip Roy (R - TX?), companies like Novartis should have a right to make profits. And who are we to restrict this fundamental right of companies to make profits?

Rampant healthcare costs scares patients away from ER

Which is morbidly funny since in Germany, we have an exactly opposite problem in regards to ERs: People are often entering the ER, therefore occupying doctors, although they don't need to go there. On the one hand, it's the problem that in the rural areas, we lack the doctors who could take care of smaller operations and examinations, and on the other hand, people lose all understanding of their injuries, so they don't know when it's time to avoid the ER and simply see a doctor next door. But these are luxury problems, compared to what people in the US experience, thanks to a completely corrupted healthcare system.
But Clark knew that the emergency room can be expensive. A few months earlier, she’d gone to the emergency after falling down her friend’s stairs. She ended up with a $1,200 bill that she still hadn’t paid.

Talkin' 'bout Socialism: EPA intends to remove ban on Asbestos

Asbestos is a group of fibrous, heat-resistant minerals used in manufactured goods, particularly building materials. According to the World Health Organization, "All types of asbestos cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, cancer of the larynx and ovary, and asbestosis (fibrosis of the lungs)."
In regards to my headline: Asbestos, which was produced in the then-Soviet town of Asbest, was mainly used as a means of buildings, in the GDR too. We still have an entire sector of removal of Asbestos in older buildings. It's a risky job that includes lengthy pauses because you cannot work too long in removing this poisonous material, because it could assail your lungs. Now imagine that we would again use this toxic trash in our buildings because the lobby-stricken EPA lowered regulations on it.
"The sheer number of lives cut short and families destroyed from asbestos exposure demand nothing less than an outright ban," Benesh said in a statement. "I can't think of an easier vote fo

Woman wrongly stripped off her pension commits suicide

The 81-year-old had been left reliant on her savings when the Department for Work and Pensions stopped paying her pension.
This is how a society looks like when people are withdrawn their most essential needs because of the law or whatever. You get your society's elders jumping off roofs because you want to save some of the taxpayer's money. Think about it.

Bolsonaro's government lost fight against SC and opposition to remove protection from rain forest

Taken together, this means that Bolsonaro’s signature action to start the rollback of indigenous territories and declare open season on Amazon deforestation – which needs both congressional and judicial approval to fly – looks to be crashing on takeoff. It’s also a glimmer of hope for indigenous and environmental protections in a country now led by a president openly hostile to Brazil’s indigenous peoples and Amazon rainforest – repositories of its vast social and biological diversity, and key to stabilizing the global climate.

On its first day in office, the Bolsonaro administration decided in executive action MP 870 to remove the authority to legally recognize and physically demarcate indigenous lands from the National Indian Foundation (FUNAI) and give it to the Ministry of Agriculture, Ranching and Supply (MAPA). MAPA is controlled by politicians affiliated with the anti-indigenous agriculture caucus of the c

Private security company Blackwater to send 5,000 troops to Venezuela to topple Maduro government

Over the last several months, the sources said, Prince has sought investment and political support for such an operation from influential Drumpf supporters and wealthy Venezuelan exiles. Rochester Drug Cooperative CEO charged by Feds amid opioid crisis

“This prosecution is the first of its kind: executives of a pharmaceutical distributor and the distributor itself have been charged with drug trafficking, trafficking the same drugs that are fueling the opioid epidemic that is ravaging this country. Our Office will do everything in its power to combat this epidemic, from street-level dealers to the executives who illegally distribute drugs from their boardrooms,” U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said in a statement.

RDC was also charged with failing to properly report thousands of suspicious orders of oxycodone, fentanyl and other controlled substances to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), officials said.

In the opioid industry, RDC is a middleman that buys controlled substances from manufacturers and sells them to individual pharmacies. As one of the nation's 10 largest drug distributors, it delivered to more than 1,300 pharmacies and took in over $1 billion in revenue during the relevant five-year pe

He imagined “an army of smart, enterprising graduates building businesses in Detroit, New Orleans, Providence, Baltimore, Cleveland, St. Louis, and other cities that could use a boost.” In 2011, he donated $120,000 of his own money to start Venture For America (VFA), an accelerator meant to build new startups and new jobs in emerging cities outside of coastal startup hubs.

Billionaires' eagerness to contribute to Notre Dame de Paris' reconstruction draws backlash

The criticism comes after Francois Henri Pinault and Bernard Arnault — both billionaires — each pledged more than $100 million to the restoration efforts. The rivals have a history of one-upmanship.

A common position among critics: The mega-donations prove social problems could be quickly addressed if the wealthy were motivated to do so.

So when wealthy Frenchmen quickly pledged massive donations, some associated with the movement balked. “If they can give tens of millions to rebuild Notre Dame, then they should stop telling us there is no money to help with the social emergency,” The Washington Post quotes Philippe Martinez, head of the CGT trade union.

The US Museum of Natural History to host rainforest-threatening Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro

Once upon a time, the IRS wanted to tax the rich

The IRS commissioner aimed to stanch the country’s losses with what he proclaimed would be “a game-changing strategy.” In short order, Charles Rettig, then a high-powered tax lawyer and today President Donald Drumpf’s IRS commissioner, warned that the squad was conducting “the audits from hell.”

For starters, they can devote seemingly limitless resources to hiring the best legal and accounting talent. Such taxpayers tend not to steamroll tax laws; they employ complex, highly refined strategies that seek to stretch the tax code to their advantage. It can take years for IRS investigators just to understand a transaction and deem it to be a violation.

Because the audits are private — IRS officials can go to prison if they divulge taxpayer information — details of the often epic paper battles between the rich and the tax collectors are sparse, with little in the public record. Attorneys are also loath to talk about their clients’ t

Motel 6 (accidentally? intentionally?) handed guest list over to ICE, now charged by state of Washington

The chain has settled a lawsuit brought by the state of Washington over the controversial policy of seven of its hotels in that state between 2015 and 2017. The company has also said it will stop the practice of handing over guest information without a subpoena or warrant, unless it believes someone is in imminent danger.

Trump's undoing of school meal standards might be sued by states

Both lawsuits center around a new rule issued by the Drumpf administration’s U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) which slashed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act’s (HHFKA) whole-grain-rich standard, meaning that now only half of the grain-based foods served in school meals have to be whole-grain-rich. Previously, all grain foods served to kids having to contain at least half whole grains.

In [rolling back school meal standards,] the USDA unlawfully departed from Congress’s unambiguous directive that it determine school meal requirements based on nutrition science, and instead relied on impermissible and unsound extra-statutory factors such as students’ perceived taste preferences for less healthy foods and some schools’ desire for operational “flexibility.”

YouTube experiences a hard time combatting extremism and conspiracy theories

The massive “library,” generated by users with little editorial oversight, is bound to have untrue nonsense. Instead, YouTube’s problem is that it allows the nonsense to flourish. And, in some cases, through its powerful artificial intelligence system, it even provides the fuel that lets it spread.

YouTube still has struggled to explain any new corporate vision to the public and investors – and sometimes, to its own staff. Five senior personnel who left YouTube and Google in the last two years privately cited the platform’s inability to tame extreme, disturbing videos as the reason for their departure.

Somewhere along the last decade, he added, YouTube prioritized chasing profits over the safety of its users. “We may have been hemorrhaging money,” he said. “But at least dogs riding skateboards never killed anyone.”

Workers of the World, Unite - on GitHub!

Pretty Communist, this Chinese "people's" republic, eh? No? Review on «Private Government», by Elizabeth Anderson

But contemporary conditions make simply up and quitting unfeasible for a significant slice of the population — namely, those who are already the most vulnerable. If you need a job as a condition of probation, or if your visa is tied to your employer, or if you’re an immigrant working without documentation, “exit” is impossible without imprisonment or exile.
Oh well, but you can refer such some problems - those for immigrants - to the state: You only need the visa to enter a country, but the company probably doesn't care where you come from as long as you're capable of doing your job well. One can only wonder what would happen to you when the state didn't exist and the company ruled all over you.
As David Graeber makes abundantly clear in his book Bullshit Jobs, the “bureaucracy” we’ve been trained to hate and to associate with the state is at least as common in the corporate world. Going to the DMV kinda sucks, but is deal

On income equality and Wall Street bonuses

(Because the Wall Street brokers contribute as much as burger flippers do, right? Seriously: The discrepancy between the incomes of respective professions is horrible. By comparison, the federal minimum wage has increased about 116 percent during the same period, according to an analysis from the Institute for Policy Studies, a left-leaning research center that used the comptroller's latest data. If the minimum wage had grown at the same pace as Wall Street bonuses, fast-food workers and other low-wage workers would earn a baseline wage of $33.51 an hour, the group said.
