Flower power! The movement to bring back Britain's beautiful meadows | Biodiversity | The Guardian

More than 97% of meadows have been destroyed, but the fight is now on to restore them. They are essential for plants and insects – but is it wise to lose food-producing fields?

Meadows excel at storing carbon; grasslands in Britain store more carbon than any other habitat. “What’s really exciting is that the biggest levels of carbon sequestration happen when you convert an arable field into a species-rich pasture,” says Dines. Once established, a meadow is a stable store of carbon; plough it up, and the carbon is released.

How was the weather in December 2020? A review of weather data for Taipei City.

As a nerdy scientist one of my interests is weather observation. Almost every season or month I am wondering if this month was colder or rainier or sunnier than in previous years. Usually personal impression and memory can fool you, so I decided to look at the data from weather stations and compare the current month with previous years. For December 2020 my feeling was that it was colder and rainier than usual in Taipei City. But when looking at the climate data provided by the Central Weather Bureau Taiwan (ROC) and comparing the data from December 2020 with each December for the previous 20 years, as well as with the long-term average, December 2020 was not that unusual, except for one thing.

International Siberian Shelf Study Expeditions 2020
22 Ottobre 2020 - @ISSSarctic2020

Show more...

#LetteraAlleGenerazioniFuture

Show more...

Show more...

Bumblebees are going extinct in a time of ‘climate chaos’
Out of the 124 staple crops grown for human consumption, 70 percent depend on insect pollination.
Though the plight of honeybees tends to draw the most attention, recent research suggests that bumblebees are far more efficient pollinators. They are bigger and hairier and so can carry more pollen.
